This is the design, development, and testing of a manually operated automata device that depicts a person roasting a marshmallow over a campfire in a bear area. The purpose of this project was to conceptualize, design, and build a functional mechanical automata device incorporating multiple moving figures with at least three dependent motions. The device converts rotational motion from a hand crank into linear and oscillating motions through a series of cam gears and rods.
The final prototype successfully achieved the intended motions: the person figure moves their hand to roast a marshmallow, the campfire flames flicker, and surrounding environmental elements (bear and owl figures) create an animated scene. The device was designed using SolidWorks, 3D printed for assembly, and manually tested for functionality.
The device converts manual rotational input from a crank into coordinated linear and oscillating motions through the use of cam gears and vertical rods. This mechanism animates the scene of a person roasting a marshmallow while additional figures, such as flames, a bear, and an owl, add environmental interaction. It works by rotating 5 cam gears with varying sizes that move vertical rods to a specific height and speed determined by the shape of the gear. These vertical rods interact with the objects above and give the illusion of an animated scene.
